This adaptive reuse of a turn of the century warehouse is located on Chicago’s westside. The program included a residence, courtyard, and office space. The residence occupies the second floor, while the office space and courtyard are on the first. Segregation of spaces was critical to this project, both between the office space and residence, and between the public and private elements of the residence.
The lobby is a two story space with stairs designed by a local artist. The lobby separates the two sides of the residence, public and private. The private side contains the family’s bedrooms, while the public has is an open plan with the kitchen and living space. Preserving the character of the building was done by leaving exposed brick when possible and reuse of building elements. Window sashes became skylights, old beams became stair treads and bathroom counters, and elevator gears became central objects of the living space. On the first floor part of the roof was removed to create a walled in courtyard. This creates a large green space that can be used for large gatherings. Future plans include a third floor addition with a private office.
